A common question we are asked is, “What is the difference between a 75% and 100% thread patch?” To answer this question, we must first clarify the part threads play in a custom patch’s embroidery coverage.
Understanding Embroidery and Backing Options
Embroidery coverage refers to the amount of embroidery that is stitched across the entire surface of a patch. To simplify how we determine the amount of coverage, we use embroidery percentages of 50%, 75%, and 100%. The more we increase the thread coverage of a given patch, the higher the percentage.
In terms of thread, this means the stitching of your 100% thread patch includes the entire area. Your 75% patch’s stitching covers three-quarters of the patch surface while 50% only expands across half.
Once we have helped our customers grasp the concept of embroidery coverage there is still a question of what happens in the spaces that are not covered if a 50% or 75% patch is chosen. The answer to this question is mesh backing.
When deciding on thread percentage you must also consider how much mesh backing on your custom patch you want show. With a 100% thread patch, rayon thread is stitched throughout the patch which means no mesh will show. At 75% and 50% thread the remaining 25% and 50% of the patch will be visible mesh as well. With a 75% thread patch you can still have a great looking patch while economizing on its overall cost.
