Veterans Day, also known as “Armistice Day” was first observed on November 11th, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. The holiday didn't receive national attention until 1938 despite the fact that Congress recognized it officially with a passed resolution in 1926. The observance is often mistaken with Memorial Day.   1. The American Flag, a widely recognized patriotic symbol of the United States, has had 27 official versions, each with a different number of stars. The fifty star version that we know today was created by Robert G. Heft. He was a 17-year-old student in Ohio and submitted his entry to President Eisenhower after Alaska and Hawaii became the 49th and 50th states. American Flag lapel pins have been worn as a sign of respect and pride by veterans for years.
  2. Other countries like Canada, Great Britain, France, and Australia commemorate veterans on or near November 11th. Veterans of World Wars I and II are honored.
  3. There are 9.2 million veterans over the age of 65 and 1.9 million veterans under the age of 35. Of those numbers, 1.8 million veterans are women.
  4. California, Florida, Texas, New York, and Pennsylvania have more than 1 million veteran residents. CA has 2.1 million, FL has 1.7 million, TX has 1.7 million, NY has 1 million, and PA has 1 million. This information was reported by the U.S. Census Bureau and United States Department of Veterans Affairs.
  5. There is a ceremony on Veterans Day each year in Arlington National Ceremony. The event honors veterans who died during war.
