National Braille Literacy Month Custom Lapel Pins
January is National Braille Literacy Month. The annual initiative focuses on the ability to read and write Braille. Area businesses, organizations, schools, and other groups can do their part to support blind patrons, members, and students in their cities by creating a custom lapel pin that is completely written in Braille. This is one way to embrace the vision impaired and also a way to communicate with them through the written word.
What is Braille?
Braille is a tactile writing system meant for the blind and the hearing impaired. Embossed paper makes it possible for people to enjoy books and other written forms of media as well as to communicate back and forth with other Braille readers. Special screens make it possible for blind and visually impaired people to read content on a computer. A slate and stylus or a Braille writer are also common tools that are used to encourage literacy.
The National Federation of the Blind notes that 90% of blind children in America are not taught to read. The problem can be attributed to a number of different things. First of all, there are not enough Braille teachers, the teachers available know little about helping the blind to read, and many instructors don’t believe Braille is important.
