Custom Enamel Pins by Signature Pins

What Are Custom Enamel Pins?

Custom enamel pins get their name from the type of paint used for adding color to a design. Enamel paint is a special type of paint that has a glossy finish after air-drying. It’s an ideal paint to use on outdoor surfaces or objects that will subject to hard wear and tear because of its resilience.

For custom lapel pins, enamel paint allows pin manufacturers to add a glossy finish to the artwork of a pin knowing that the design will keep its vibrant appearance for years without fading or flaking.

Here at Signature Pins, we offer two different types of custom enamel pins: soft enamel and hard enamel (also known as cloisonne). Choosing between the two is mostly a matter of personal preference, but before we get into that, let’s talk about picking the enamel colors for a custom lapel pin design.

A Word About Colors on Custom Enamel Pins

When it comes to adding color to a custom enamel pin design, it’s important to know that all of the major pin manufacturers, including us, use the Pantone Matching System.

Using Pantone colors for the custom enamel pins we help design ensures consistency across all parties.

If you need a custom logo pin or corporate lapel pin, we can match your company’s brand colors using the Pantone Matching System. If there is a style guide for your company’s brand, send it to us, and we’ll make sure to use all brand-specific colors in the design of your custom enamel pins.

Keep in mind that enamel colors will look slightly different from one computer monitor to another. So, the best way to choose the colors for your custom enamel pins is to use a physical Pantone color book and then send us the color codes you need. You can pick up a Panton color book online from Amazon or from a similar retailer.

Another way to pick colors is to think of popular sports teams or schools that have a color you like. This way, our art team can look up the Pantone colors used by that team or school, and we can use those colors to make your custom enamel pins.

When our Signature Pins team creates digital proofs of artwork, we always make sure to include the Pantone color codes so that you can double-check that we have the right colors for your custom enamel pin design.

Once you have the colors you need, the only thing left to decide is if you prefer a soft enamel design or a hard enamel design.

We make creating lapel pins easy!

But we would prefer you hear it directly from other customers 😉

what is soft enamel - signature pins

Custom Soft Enamel Pins

When it comes to custom enamel pins, soft enamel designs are by far the most common. They’re created using the die striking method, which involves using a steel mold, sometimes called a die, to stamp artwork into a blank piece of brass.

The molds are custom made for every enamel pin design that we make. Once all of the pins have been stamped, we put them through the deburring process to grind away the rough edges and then add metal plating.

For custom soft enamel pins, the enamel colors are added to the recessed areas of the design after the metal plating process is completed. Since the colors are contained within the recessed areas of the artwork, the pins have a layered appearance.

Custom Hard Enamel Pins

Hard enamel pins are created using a similar process as soft enamel pins, however, the final result will look and feel slightly different.

Once the pins are struck and deburred, they go straight to colorfilling instead of going to metal plating. When they’re finished, hard enamel pins have a smooth, polished surface because the enamel paint is at an even level with the raised metal strokes of the design.

So, during the colorfilling process of a hard enamel pin, the recessed portions of the design are overfilled, and when the enamel dries, the pins are polished until the surface is smooth and even.

After that, hard enamel pins go through the metal plating process, and then they are finished. To learn more about the difference between hard and soft enamel pins, you can check out our blog or our custom enamel pin gallery.
