K9, SWAT, and Specialty Unit Pins

Specialty units order pins the way they order patches — as identity. K9 handler pins with the dog’s name, SWAT and tactical unit insignia, marine and aviation units, honor guard pins, and task-force designs all reproduce from unit artwork, usually die struck in black nickel or antique silver. Where the unit’s emblem is detailed beyond what enamel can hold, offset printing reproduces it photographically.

Retirement and Years of Service

A retirement pin is the one order where nobody argues about the budget. Departments mark 5 through 30-plus years with a base design and a changed year band — the same mold serving every milestone — and the retirement piece itself steps up to cloisonné, polished flush and boxed. The mechanics are the same as years of service pins anywhere else; the difference is the badge on it.

Community and Support Pins

Not every police pin is worn by an officer. Citizens academy graduation pins, community outreach giveaways, National Night Out designs, and awareness and remembrance pins worn by families and supporters all come through the same door — most in soft enamel full color, and flag-and-badge combinations through the same artwork process as flag pins. For memorial designs, the proof carries the name and date exactly as the department signs off on them.
